Process of Communication

  Process of Communication:

According to Keith Davis, "Communication is the process of passing information and understanding from person to another" . It involves imparting a common idea and covers all types of behaviour resulting therefrom. This indicates that various factors enter the process of communication.

The process of communication comprises of whatever you are speaking, writing, listening or reading, communication is more than a single act. It is a chain of events, it is a process.

The process of communication involves following elements:

1.Sender or Communicator: The person who conveys the message is known as communicator or sender. By initiating the message, the communicator attempts to achieve understanding and change in the behaviour of receiver.

2. Message: It is the subject matter of any communication. It may involve any fact, idea or information.

3. Encoding: The sender of information organises his idea into series of symbols (words, sign etc.) which he feels will communicate the intended meaning to the receiver or receivers.

4. Communication Channel : The communicator has to choose the channel for sending the information. It is the link that connects the sender and receiver. Air, sight and sound are the important communication channel. The channels of communication which are officially recognised by the organization are known as formal channels.

5. Receiver: The person who receives the message is called receiver. The communication process is incomplete without the existence of receiver of the message. It is receiver who receives and understands the message.

6. Decoding: The receiver translate the message into words for the purpose of understanding. Decoding helps the receiver to derive meaning from the message.

7. Feedback: A communication often lead to other communications. A message sent is followed by a reaction or response from the receiver, which requires another message to be communicated by the sender and so on. The reaction or response of the receiver is known as 'feedback' .

8.Noise : Noise is the disruption or interference in communication process anywhere along the way. It occurs at any point of communication process. Noise can be sound of someone coughing, a truck driving etc. To have an effective communication noise should be avoided.
